Finding Stillness
Vibrant, intuitive paintings exploring the interplay between feeling and sense of place.
Grace Anglin: Artist Statement
Painting is my way of creating space for reflection and emotional freedom that I don’t always find elsewhere. Picking up the brush when I’m feeling anxious or conflicted helps me slow down and channel my unsettled energy into something physical that I can reckon with.
I begin with a basic composition and follow what draws me in. My style is loose, intuitive, and open to imperfections. I’m most interested in creating something that feels alive; something that resonates emotionally as well as visually. The meditative process allows me to explore the interplay between my inner experience and the outer world. The resulting paintings often convey a mix of stillness and movement.
Over the years, I’ve filled countless sketchbooks with ink and watercolor studies of quiet, everyday moments. When turning inward, I’ve poured myself into large abstract works to reconnect with a sense of imaginative freedom. In my latest acrylic paintings, those two approaches have naturally started to blend.
I gravitate towards bright, saturated colors — not to reflect my emotions but to push against them. These colors become a language for the feelings behind each moment, capturing both the repose of central figures and the energy around them.
I’m largely self-taught, drawing inspiration and guidance from my mom, an artist I deeply admire. I live and work in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset.
